Short term functional outcome after arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using single bundle quadrupled hamstring tendon graft

Objectives and questions: The study investigates the functional outcomes of patients undergoing arthroscopic anatomic single bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using quadrupled semitendinosus and gracilis tendon grafts, evaluated through the Tegner Lysholm knee score and Visual Analogue Score (VAS).

The study highlights the prevalence of ACL injuries, their impact on knee stability and functions, the importance of surgical techniques, and post-operative rehabilitation in achieving optimal clinical results. The primary objective focuses on assessing the functional outcomes post-surgery, while secondary objectives explore the associations between sociodemographic and clinical factors, including age, gender, operated side, and BMI.

Material and methods: This prospective observational study evaluates the functional outcomes of 27 patients with Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries following arthroscopic reconstruction using a quadrupled semitendinosus tendon autograft. Preoperative and postoperative assessments were conducted at intervals of 2, 6, 12, and 24 weeks using the Tegner Lysholm knee score and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain.

Results: The patient cohort predominantly comprised males (85.2%), with a mean age of 31.67 years. The results indicated significant improvements in knee function, with the mean Tegner Lysholm score increasing from 71.81 ± 5.26 preoperatively to 92.04 ± 4.28 at 24 weeks postoperatively (p<0.001).

Additionally, patients reported a decrease in pain levels measured by the VAS, highlighting the effectiveness of the surgical intervention. The majority of patients demonstrated improved mobility, stability, and reduced symptoms such as limping, instability, and swelling over the follow-up period. There were no major complications or re-operations noted. The findings underscore the importance of proper surgical techniques and postoperative rehabilitation protocols in achieving optimal functional outcomes following ACL reconstruction.

Discussion and conclusions: In conclusion, ACL reconstruction via arthroscopic techniques demonstrates excellent functional outcomes, emphasizing the importance of meticulous surgical approach and comprehensive rehabilitation in achieving optimal recovery.
