Pink Noise: Sound, Body, and Queer Care
Text
Pink Noise is an 8-channel sound installation presented at Galerie im Turm (2023), exploring embodied experiences of illness, identity, and queerness within sociocultural and healthcare contexts. The work responds to the often fragmented and alienating experiences queer individuals face in navigating Germany’s healthcare system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elp_vSnvAHI&ab_channel=GalerieimTurm, https://galerie-im-turm.net/exhibition/pink-noise/
The objectives of this artistic contribution is to show how the installation seeks to translate intimate bodily experiences—such as those triggered by an HPV diagnosis—into a shared sonic environment, creating a space for reflection, empathy, and visibility. It interrogates the boundaries between private suffering and public discourse, emphasizing how sound can articulate what is often medically and socially silenced. For this work I used research based sonic methods using multi-channel sound design, the installation layers whispers, bodily resonances, and ambient noise to evoke internal states and social dislocations. The sonification has been recorded inside the vulva with a DIY microphone. Audience engagement is mediated through spatialized listening, inviting participants to inhabit the sonic body of the work. As a result of three months long exhibition visitors experience a heightened awareness of the embodied and emotional dimensions of queer health narratives. The immersive environment fosters empathy, reflection, and dialogue about the gaps in care, communication, and support for queer patients.
I believe Pink Noise demonstrates the potential of sound art to function as both a therapeutic and sociopolitical tool, highlighting vulnerabilities, resilience, and the necessity of inclusive healthcare practices. The work situates artistic practice as a form of knowledge production and a site for imagining alternative care futures.
