Collective Creativity: Group Art Psychotherapy with Clients Managing Chronic Conditions
Text
Art psychotherapy involves the clinical application of artistic expression within a therapeutic relationship to facilitate the expression and processing of emotions that may be difficult to articulate verbally. Engaging in artistic creation and reflective dialogue enables clients to communicate their experiences of living with chronic health conditions, discover new meaning and purpose, and explore existential questions. The creative process can provide a respite from distressing thoughts, foster present-moment awareness, and enhance emotional well-being. In doing so, it may alleviate the psychological and psychosocial burden of pain, support more adaptive coping strategies, and cultivate greater mind-body awareness.
At the Centre for Integrative Care (CIC) in Glasgow, the majority of clients attending art psychotherapy groups experience chronic illness, fatigue, and a range of mental health difficulties. The primary aim of the service is to facilitate self-expression through creative exploration, and to provide a supportive environment in which individuals can share and reflect upon their experiences.
Feedback from participants indicates that engagement in art psychotherapy has had a meaningful and, at times, unexpected impact on their lives. Overall, the groups have provided a secure and restorative space for creative self-expression, enabling participants to explore deeper thoughts and emotions, develop interpersonal trust, and strengthen social connectedness. The authenticity, openness, and honesty cultivated within these groups have contributed to new perspectives, enhanced resilience, and improved self-management, resulting in increased confidence and self-esteem. Moreover, participants have reported a renewed sense of hope, empowerment, and curiosity, supporting their ongoing journeys of self-discovery and creative growth.
