Collective Creativity: Qualitative Study of Group Flow Among Working Adults Through Group Music Improvisation
Text
This qualitative study explores how continual engagement in group flow through improvised music impacts the lives of working adults. Three adults without formal musical training participated in a series of three group music improvisation sessions, complemented by initial and final interviews. Thematic analysis revealed key patterns in participants’ experiences, including the development of non-verbal connection through music, the release of perfectionistic tendencies, and a sense of alignment between musical expression and emotional states. These themes contributed to a deeper awareness of self and emotional authenticity. The findings suggest that group flow in improvised music may serve as a powerful avenue for self-care, emotional regulation, and interpersonal connection. Implications extend to therapeutic settings, workplace well-being, and everyday relationships, highlighting the potential of creative, embodied experiences to foster personal insight and co-regulation.
