Meeting Abstract

Art, Health and Justice: Healing in conflict and post-conflict settings

Christopher Bailey - University College London; Jameel Arts and Health Lab

Text

In this performance/presentation, Bailey will argue that collective sensemaking, particularly through modes of creative expression, are essential in the recovery process of conflict induced trauma, both for the individual and for the community at large. He will cover the neurology of traumatic recovery through arts as well as the concepts of memorialization and transitional justice as a way of interrupting the cycle of transgenerational trauma and systemic violence. Using examples from history, both ancient and recent, Bailey will not only describe the mechanisms of healing and transformation in terms of basic science, but use the tools of creative expression to allow the audience to feel the biochemical reactions just described.
