Introduction: Advancements in digitalization and healthcare, such as the implementation of patient data management systems, have impacted patient care, particularly in intensive care units. Communication challenges, including delayed information exchange, fragmented workflows and handoff errors, are identified as significant contributors to medical errors. Digital tools, including secure messaging platforms and digital whiteboards, have shown potential to address these challenges by improving communication between healthcare professionals.

Methods: This study employs a mixed methods approach according to Almeida [1] using a concurrent embedded design, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods. Qualitative data, including semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observations, form the primary data source, while quantitative data is gathered through online surveys using the System Usability Scale (SUS). The embedded nature of the design ensures that qualitative data can offer a deep exploration of user challenges and barriers in adoption while the quantitative component supports these findings by validating and quantifying key aspects, such as usability and employee satisfaction.

Results: Survey results show no significant differences in effectiveness between different wards or occupational groups. A total of 7 barriers in adoption were identified.

Conclusion: The study provides valuable insights into barriers in the adoption of digital solutions in hospital environments.
