I’m Going Out, I’m Going In
Text
In times of crisis, what can give us precious (re-)assurance?
What if, what we need the most right now, is humanity – human connection?
And how can we strengthen it?
The installation I’m Going Out, I’m Going In invites visitors to a moment of conscious human coming together, in which two people gaze into each other’s eyes for three minutes, seeing the other and themselves at the same time. Through headphones, they hear questions, such as: What might have brought this person joy? What might have made the person sad? What scares them? What do they need most right now?
The piece creates an encounter in the here-and-now, shaped by the moment of opening up and the action of turning inward.
The title comes from a method of body psychotherapy devised by Will Davis. In his Functional Analysis, body and mind are seen to be working together in deep centering, merging into a unique state of functioning.
The set-up consists of two seats facing each other, with audio instructions via headphones. With the use of sensors, visitors are guided to either invite a second visitor to sit across from them (if only one seat is taken) or, when two people are seated, to gaze into each others eyes for three minutes.
