Text

This thesis examines the effect of live sound interventions on the behavior of individuals in the entrance area of a psychiatric facility. Using qualitative, systematic, passive participatory behavioral observation, a total of 48 individuals were observed, 17 of whom were observed without musical intervention and 31 of whom were observed while live sounds were being played. The evaluation was based on an inductively developed category system according to Mayring (2015). The results show that music can have a variety of effects in the observed context. Without musical accompaniment, the behavior of many people in the room tended to be withdrawn, neutral, or distant. In contrast, under the influence of live sounds, a much more differentiated picture emerged: positive affects, such as smiles or relaxed facial expressions, occurred more frequently. A special methodological approach in this work was the additional calculation of relative frequencies in order to highlight differences between the observation conditions. Although this quantitative evaluation is not the focus of Mayring's qualitative content analysis, it was deliberately used as a supplement to support the interpretation and systematically highlight comparisons between the groups.
