The artist as a patient

Throughout history artists had an important relationship with their doctors. Rubens, Munch, Van Gogh, Broodthaers all had an inspiring relation with their doctor, being physical or mental. In contemporary arts a disease can put the artist in a very vulnerable position. The disease on itself can change the practice of the artist in a substantial way, even making art impossible or so much changed the work gets hardly recognised. Artists who develop an disabling chronic disease face themselves with an enormous challenge; to perceive the world as an artist and practical issues, access to the studio, mobility...

This paper will focus on living contemporary artists with disabilities, René Daniels, Ryan Gander and Emily Baker and evaluate how they or their art experienced marginalisation in aesthetic-design led environments.
