Healing Art and Architecture – Feng Shui in Hospitals
Text
As a conceptual architect based in Vienna, I have specialized in applying Feng Shui principles for nearly 30 years. I have integrated the traditional Chinese philosophy of healthy living into hospitals in Austria and abroad. Through intentional use of color, light, materials, art, and spatial arrangements, I have created hospital environments that foster emotional well-being, trust, and a sense of safety for patients, relatives, and healthcare staff.
In many projects, I collaborated closely with artists, enriching spaces with energetic interventions that deepen emotional resonance and strengthen the healing atmosphere.
This presentation showcases several of my hospital projects. I will illustrate design strategies used to transform conventional clinical spaces into environments that reduce anxiety and enhance emotional comfort. These interventions are rooted in both Feng Shui theory and psychological design.
Across numerous projects, redesigned spaces consistently generated a more welcoming atmosphere. Patients reported feeling calmer and more supported, while healthcare personnel described improved orientation, reduced stress, and greater motivation. One client confirmed that staff turnover is lower in Feng Shui wards compared to others.
Observations indicate that subtle energetic adjustments can significantly influence the emotional climate of hospital environments, contributing to a more holistic healing experience.
Feng Shui in hospitals is not decoration—it is an integrative design approach acknowledging the deep connection between space and the human psyche. Thoughtfully shaped environments can nurture trust, restore emotional balance, and support healing. Through these examples, I aim to show how architecture can create “spaces for the soul” within modern healthcare settings.
