The long-standing collaboration between the University of Music and Drama Hamburg (HfMT) and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) has fostered dynamic exchanges in teaching and practice. Music therapists work in various clinical fields at the UKE and supervise HfMT students during their internships. In 2022, the Center for Music Medicine and Music Therapy (CMM) was founded at the UKE. Since then, medical doctors and music therapists have met regularly for expert lectures and professional dialogue to further the integration of music and music therapy within the medical center. Regular scientific conferences connect different disciplines, promote academic exchange, and draw public attention to current topics in music medicine and music therapy.

With support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), four additional projects have been established within the cooperation between both institutions in the context of the Ligeti Center:

1. the development of a Music Therapy Teaching Center (MIA),
2. the introduction of musical soundscapes in critical hospital areas (Healing SoundScapes, HSS),
3. a consultation service for musicians, and
4. a prevention project addressing health issues in music training.

This presentation provides an overview of all projects, with a particular focus on the development of the Music Therapy Teaching Center (MIA) as a pioneering initiative within UKE. It illustrates the requirements that must be in place and how students are integrated at different stages of their learning process, benefiting from MIA’s teaching concept. Potentials and challenges are discussed as an example of further implementing Arts in Medicine.
