Spa Music: Cultural Revitalization of the German Kurort

Sabine Lydia Schmidt - Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach am Main

Text

European Kurorte, historically known for therapeutic waters and healing practices are facing today's urbanized and fast-paced world, where mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression are prevalent. Spa & health resorts offer a unique setting for healing, not only through medical therapies but also through artistic and cultural experiences that foster relaxation, community, and emotional well-being.

As part of my PhD this research examines how contemporary music, especially performances and sound art in the context of clubculture, can be integrated into the healing processes of spa resorts to improve mental health and promote social cohesion, while simultaneously bringing these towns into the present. By examining the role of music in creating temporary public spaces, it reflects how artistic experiences can serve as remedies in revitalized stage settings such as mostly abandoned music pavilions of the Kurpark.

I draw on interviews within Kurort administrations and clinics, that have incorporated cultural elements such as contemporary music festivals with experimental live-sets or sound walks in their (open air) programs. Presenting and understanding the emotional and social effects of these interdisciplinary interventions, particularly focusing on participants' sense of belonging, contemplation, relaxation, and well-being.

The fusion of modern music with traditional and medical spa therapies provides a holistic approach to healing, blending physical, spatial, emotional, and social elements. By combining the therapeutic potential of music with the restorative powers of the Kurort, these places can serve as historic and future sanctuaries, and need to be co-curated by professionals in arts and medicine.
